Why Quitting Smoking Needs An Integrated Approach

Quitting smoking is one of the most beneficial steps you can take for the future of your health and your potential lifespan. Studies have demonstrated that over half of all cigarette smokers shorten their life through their tobacco habit, and this does not even consider those who have a greatly reduced quality of life as a consequence of smoking. The truth is that virtually everyone who becomes a slave to tobacco is severely affected, and even those who are not are still paying large amounts of money for a dubious pleasure.

There are literally millions of people worldwide who want to learn how to quit smoking cigarettes in the easiest way possible, with minimum withdrawal symptoms and the least risk of failure. This last consideration is more important than is often realized, as each aborted attempt to quit invariably weakens the mind and makes the chances of future success less likely. This should not induce unnecessary fear into the mind of someone who desires to quit, but it should make sure that enough effort is put forward to discover those therapies which have the greatest chance of success. As with so many medical conditions, an integrated approach is needed if the cure is to be permanent.

The first dilemma many people face when they decide they are going to quit is how long to take over it. Should they simply quit in one go and never touch tobacco again, or should they ease down the number of cigarettes they smoke until they feel ready to take that final step? While the latter may seem to be the most logical course to take, results are always better when the former, and more demanding, course is chosen. Someone who still smokes cigarettes is, in their mind, a smoker, and when stress or external life events bother them, they are more likely to increase the dose.

stop smoking aids

Of course, quitting smoking in one go is going to be more demanding at first, and the slope can be too steep to climb if the task is undertaken with no assistance or external aids. Contrary to popular belief, it is not the physical addiction to smoking which causes the greater part of the problem, but the mental aspect as the frightened inner mind has to cope with the unthinkable, that one of its most necessary survival aids is going to be permanently taken away. That is not to belittle the immediate effect of physical withdrawal, because some nicotine aid such as gum can be help in getting over the crucial early days.

One strategy which can definitely help in the initial stages is to avoid places and situations in which you previously habitually smoked. These are less likely to be social places in the current climate as so many jurisdictions have now banned smoking in public places, but even sitting in a different chair in your living room can prevent the mind from making an association with tobacco. Avoiding people who used to smoke with you can be a far more contentious issue, but only you can judge how much your life and health are truly worth.

There are many who will advocate a way of quitting smoking which will involve you in considerable expense, usually with a professional hypnotherapist or counselor. It is important to remember that there are thousands of people who have successfully quit smoking without these expensive aids, but it is also important to consider that hypnotherapy has the highest success rate of any form of quit smoking treatment, and also that only one or two sessions is usually needed to make the change. When you think of how much money is wasted every year through smoking, you can see that these therapies are really cheap by comparison.

There are more resources available for those who want to quit smoking than ever before. Even if you cannot afford the expense of a professional hypnotherapist, you will still be able to buy recordings of hypnotherapy sessions which you can attempt to use. These will not be as effective, as the voice on the tape will have no way of reacting to any changes in your breathing or behavior in the way a professional hypnotherapist would be able to do. There will also be no opportunity for the initial consultation from which a professional can learn so much. The obvious conclusion is to use a professional if possible, but do the best you can if not.

Quitting smoking can seem a lot easier if you have supportive people around you, but this is often something you will have no control over. If you live in a major city, it is more likely that you will be able to find other people in a group who are all trying to achieve the same goal. If this is not possible for you, you can get a high level of support by joining Internet groups. These can help people from all over the world achieve the universal target of quitting smoking.
